Chicago Botanic Gardens

Sandy and Gary came for a visit this weekend, and among other things, we went to the Botanic Gardens.
It was a beautiful weekend, the sun was out and everything felt like spring. i'm glad we got to spend so much time outdoors!

The botanic gardens are about 1/2 an hour drive north of chicago. there are several different gardens and greenhouses. i think it would be absolutely beautiful once all the flowers start blooming; when we were you could see them starting to poke out of the ground. we should definitely go again in a few weeks or later this summer!
the indoors exhibitions, including a dessert and a tropical garden were pretty cool.
we happened to be there during the Illinois Orchid Society Spring Show. They had a presentation of all sorts of prize winning plants (not exactly sure how that goes), and in a separate room, just as large, they had many many orchids for sale.

i had to buy one for my growing garden :) this is it!

i wish i had toe option to choose the flower :) i'm glad you like it!
i hope it will last a long time too. i replaced its pot last night (it came with a plastic pot), i hope it wasn't a shock for it.
i already designated a babysitter for my flowers for when we'll be away :) so this time no plants will have to die for our travel.

It was a lesson for me in gardens. I thought you just planted stuff and let it grow. But at this place, the plants were neatly trimmed, and some of the trees were chopped off at the top -- more like a butcher's work that an expert gardener. Some of the trees had cables tied to their branches to make them grow in an unnatural way. Definitely an eye-opener for me.
